Pathiramanal is an enchanting island on the lake that can be accessed by boat. This 10 acre island on the backwaters is home to many rare varieties of migratory birds from different parts of the world. According to mythology a young Brahmin dived into the Vembanad Lake to perform his evening ablutions and the water madeway for the land to rise from below. The island can be accessed only by boat.

Pathiramanal which literally translates as "midnight sand" is a little located in Muhamma Panchayat, Alappuzha district of Kerala. The island which is characterized by beautiful sceneries is as well a place where migratory birds from different parts of the world can be spotted.

A 28.505 ha sized island, Pathiramal is about thirteen kilometers away from Alappuzha. The distance from Kumrakom to the island is four kilometers towards the northwest. Geographically, it is 810m away from the nearest mainland.
From Pathramanal, you can see Muhamma on the Southwest and Kulakkozhi Chira on the northwest.

The Thanneermukkom bund is situated on the left side of Kulakkozhichira. Interesting things can be done on the Pathiramanal island such as boat riding, birding, hang out with loved ones, and even a honeymoon as the calming ambiance affords visitors a place to relax. The island has a zoo and aquarium which visitors will find interesting to see.

Pathiramanal island is renowned for its lakes, backwaters, and scenery. It is advisable to visit within the hours of 6 am to you, however, if you wish to stay longer than that, bear in mind that accommodation facilities are not provided on the island so you cannot spend the night on the island. Nevertheless, you may choose to book a houseboat thereby spending the night close to the island.

Pathiramanal Boat Service

Surrounded by the Vembanad Lake, the only viable means of getting to Pathiramanal is by the waterways. You can board a motorboat or a speed boat to take you there. Some boats ply the Muhamma- Kumarakom water route, however, the boats from the Kerala State Water Transport Department (SWD) do not stop at Pathiramanal anymore.

If you wish to utilize the motorboat, it takes one and a half hours, but you can get there earlier using a speed boat as it takes thirty minutes. If you do not intend to extend your stay on the Island then you can employ a simple boat. From Kumarakom to Pathiramanal is proximately forty minutes.

The boat landing on the island is on the Western side. There are Shikara boats and houseboats which operate regularly from Kumarakom boat betty to the island. Pathiramanal Island Entry Fee

The entry to Pathiramanal Island is free for adults, children, and even foreigners an entry fee is zero. The island is open all days of the week from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM and you can enjoy island for a visiting duration of two to three hours.

The island is a plastic-free zone so visitors are not allowed to leave without clearing any wastes or dangerous goods brought during their visit. Being small-sized, the island can be covered by walking. There is also the talk about the Pathiramanal air possessing healing properties. Ninety-three species of birds, twenty-four diverse dragonflies, and thirty-four butterfly types were found based on a study conducted by the Environmental Sciences Department of MG University.

The Ezhilam Pala pulls tourists( who are mostly young lovers) in their hundreds to the island. For young lovers, it is locally believed that their wishes to together come into fruition upon visiting the island at a time when the tree is experiencing a full bloom. Myths have it that the island came into existence from the depth of the Vembanad Lake to help Vilwamangalam conduct Sandhya bandana. However, history has something different to say about the island, it is said that the island was the property of Parayi Tharakan, it was he who according to history sold it to a Gujarathi trader known as Bheem Devji. Subsequently, the land was rebought from the M/s Bheemji Trust of Cochin by Chevalier CAM Anthraper. 

Upon the enactment of the Land Reforms Act, the government took control of the island. Subsequently, it was relinquished to the Department of Tourism.

Pathiramanal Bird Sanctuary

Set amidst the backwaters of Vembanad Lake, Pathiramanal Bird Sanctuary is the favourite spot for millions of birds that have come from abroad.

Visitors can go birdwatching on this beautiful island which has been described as "Bird watcher's paradise". Close to ninety-one local species of birds and fifty migratory birds inhabit this island. Some of the birds you can find include; Little Cormorant, Whistling Duck, Whisked term, Pheasant-tailed jacanas, Intermediate after, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Gulls, Indian shag, Bronze-winged bananas, Purple baron, Pintail ducks, Cotton Pygmy-goose, Common teal, Watercock, Indian pond heron, Cattle egret, Darter, Terns, Little egrets, Large egrets, Night-heron, Cormorant.

A beautiful natural abode to exotic species of birds, Pathiramanal Bird Sanctuary offers a feast for ornithologists.

The best time to visit the Sanctuary is during the migratory seasons. The migratory period usually takes place during Winter (November and May)

Pathiramanal-Lake, Beach and Water

The island which is on the Alappuzha backwaters is located in the Vembanad lakes and it stretches to Kochi and the Kayamkulam Lake. Exploring Vembanad lake is interesting to do. The lake doubles as the longest of all lakes in India and the largest in Kerala and has an area of 2033 square kilometers. The Vembanad lake which lies at sea level is a source of freshwater for the state.

Kayal which has an outlet to the Arabian sea is between Panmana and Karthikapaly is connected to Vembanad. The Kayamkulam Lake is a shallow water lagoon where you can indulge in the boat races. The Kayamkulam Kayal is rich in prawns, some of the species include; Giant Tiger Pawn, Macrobrachium hear, Green Tiger Prawn, Orange Shrimp, Macrobrachium equids, Speckled Shrimp, Jinga Shrimp, Giant Freshwater Prawn, Metapenaus dobson, Metapenaeus brevicornis, Indian Prawn, Macrobrachium curriculum, Caridina nilotica, and Macrobrachium Spence. Crab species that can also be found in the Kayal include; Scylla Serrata and the Portunus pelagicus.

Different species of fish have been listed such as the Milkfish, Flathead mullet, Trade grey mullet, Spotted scat, Dusky sleeper, Tenpounder, Greasy grouper, Barracuda, Perchlet, Splendid ponyfish, etc. Blessed with beautiful surroundings, the beguiling Pathiramanal Beach serves as an ideal destination for tourists and locals. The Pathiramanal beach which is reputed for its nice scenery and avifauna can be visited anytime during the day. Are lunch and dinner included in the packages? If not, what dining options are available for guests? Additionally, where can they run their errands? Understanding these aspects will help us plan our stay better and ensure we have convenient access to meals and necessary services.

Yes, We can include dinner or lunch as per the request of the guests. All meals are included in the houseboat. A private driver with car is available in all our packages and you can have lunch in any place you like during sightseeing. You can either order from the resort where you are staying or go out for dinner as well

Is there car parking facility for Houseboat Trips?

I plan to drive down with friends and family, is there car parking facility in Kochi overnight or parking availability on the houseboat

Yes, We do provide the Car Parking Facility near the houseboat anchoring point for all our houseboat guests. You can park your car there if you are planning for your own arrangements for transportation and your vehicle will be safely parked

Yes, There are airport shuttles from Kochi airport to Aluva station. However they are not so frequent and you can also book a taxi from airport pre paid counter
