Alleppey has many interesting tourist destinations that attract visitors and compel them to book Alleppey tour packages. Locally, Alleppey is known as Alappuzha, meaning the land between the sea and the network of rivers flowing into it.

The backwaters that have made Alleppey tourism famous all over the world are, in fact, a network of rivers flowing back to the land. These backwaters were formed by waves and shore currents creating low barrier islands across the mouths of the many rivers flowing down from the Western Ghats range into the Arabian Sea.

The most famous tourist places to visit in Alleppey include Alleppey Beach, Arthunkal Church, Kuttanad, Alleppey Boat Races, and the Alleppey Backwaters. Nothing compares to the joy of taking a houseboat cruise in Alleppey backwaters.

It is not only a fabulous way of exploring the fascinating beauty of the backwaters as well as the small villages and the people living there, but it's also a way to connect with oneself and the nature around you.

Alleppey is a town with picturesque canals, backwaters, beaches, and lagoons. It was described as the Venice of the East by Lord Curzon. Alleppey, or Alappuzha, as it is locally known, is now the hub for backwater tourism in Kerala and renowned all over the world for its scintillating houseboat cruises and backwater cruises.

Houseboats, locally called "Kettuvallam", are available for hire on a daily basis for day tours and overnight stays to take visitors on a joyride of the old waterways of Alleppey backwater tourism. Generally, these houseboats have 2 bedrooms and attached bathrooms. Some of the boats have bedrooms fitted with air conditioners.

A routine trip includes food cooked on board in the traditional Kuttanad style and served to guests on deck so that they can enjoy the authentic flavors of Kerala while gazing at scenic views all around them. Alappuzha is unique in that it is the only district in Kerala without a forest.

It is here that you get to discover first-hand the challenges of cultivation at 4-10ft below sea level, owing to which Kerala has been declared a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System.

In addition to cruising the backwaters on a houseboat, there are many other things to do in Alleppey that should be on your itinerary.

-> Relax on the Alappuzha Beach

-> Go birdwatching at Pathiramanal Island

-> Indulge in an Ayurvedic Spa treatment

-> Explore ancient temples and churches along the backwaters

-> Check out the toddy shops & gorge on local delicacies

-> See the remote village of Kuttanad decked with picturesque paddy fields

-> Take a night walking tour of the city

-> Feed and bathe elephants at the Mahadeva Temple Elephant Kraal & Rehabilitation Centre

-> Check out the Coir Museum & learn all about the intriguing process of coir weaving

-> Go on a shopping spree at the local markets!

Although Alleppey is an all-weather destination, each season has its specific charm and is more or less adapted to the type of holiday you wish to enjoy.

Monsoon season spans from June through to October. Torrential rain and widespread flooding mean Alleppey's greenery is even greener than usual, and its canal banks and coconut palm groves adopt a plethora of deep and vibrant hues.

The peak of Alleppey's natural beauty coincides with the best season for Ayurveda, which Alleppey is also well-known for. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the fruits of the off-season like low-priced hotel stays and less crowd. Houseboat cruises are particularly atmospheric at this time, and there is little that is more beautiful than watching the rainfall on pristine waterways.

The weather is cooler and drier between October and February. While this is the perfect time for outdoor activities and sports such as houseboat cruises, Kettuvallam cruises and canoeing, beware of the peak season prices from December to January, as well as larger crowds.

Between March and May, Kerala's summer hits its peak, with sweltering and humid weather, making conditions less than ideal for doing anything. Alleppey can become a little uncomfortable during the day, especially for outdoor sightseeing or activities. But at night, the fresh sea breeze does bring much-needed relief.

If you like hot, wet heat and have light linen or cotton clothes, take advantage of the off-season prices and avoid the crowds!
