Alleppey beach has a bridge called Kadal Paalam in the local language Malayalam that means "Sea Bridge". This 137 years old bridge, now in ruins, still stands at the beach and is reminiscent of the more magnificent days of Alleppey.
Alappuzha was the main port during the British Rulee. At that time, this Sea Bridge was used to transfer spices, goods, etc., from Kottayam/Idukki to ships, which would be anchored to this bridge in the sea. However, when a port at Cochin opened, the Alappuzha port lost its significance and was not used much.
You must be wondering what is the point of visiting the bridge? The thing is that the ruins of this bridge remind of the splendid days of Alleppey when it was a main seaport of Kerala. Although tourists are not allowed to enter the bridge, one can still take photographs of this bridge, which makes a beautiful backdrop.
For long, tourists and local people have been trying to make the authorities take steps for the conservation of this heritage structure, which is a testimony to the rich heritage of the district.
