The Kerala Folklore Museum started its journey in 2009. It was a non-profit organization at the beginning. It was the dream project of George Thaliath and his wife Annie George, and they had joined his father Jacob V Thaliath in dealing with Indian art after his post-graduation to keep it alive. It took 25 years to build the museum. 62 carpenters and skilled workers have worked on this project for more than 7 years.
Entrance
The very facade and entrance of the Kerala Folklore Museum will blow your mind! The door is built from the wooden carvings collected from across Kerala. The remnants of a 16th-century temple in Tamil Nadu are also used. You will notice a striking Manichitrathazhu, a beautiful and antique ornate door lock found on traditional doorways of Kerala.
The Main Building
The Kerala Folklore Museum building consists of three floors.
The first floor is Kalithattu, which is essentially a floor dedicated to play. On the first floor, you will find interesting information and dance costumes of Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, and Ottanthullal among others.
The second floor is called Kanjadalam. It means lotus petals. On this floor, different mural paintings are kept. Even the wooden ceiling is made up of 60 different frames.
Finally, a beautiful performance theatre occupies the third floor. Currently, the theatre carries out authentic stage performances. These performances are typically held around 6:30 PM every day.
In addition to these fascinating aspects, you will also find 4,000 artifacts on display in the museum including masks, sculptures, manuscripts, and jewelry. These antiques belong to the whole of India, and not just Kerala. Utensils from even the Stone Age are preserved here. Other than this, the musical instruments of olden times kept here will certainly capture your attention!
Folklore Museum supports artists to sell their work, which is commendable. You can buy portraits, mural paintings, oil paintings, etc. Traditional Painting schools like Tanjavur Artworks, Mysore paintings and reproductions of the age-old traditional school of Indian paintings are also available.
In Kerala Folklore Museum, you can buy antiques at a fair price. Certificates about the artifacts can also be provided.
You will find it in the Folklore Museum shop that sells handicrafts and handmade textiles. You can purchase different types of Kerala sarees, pure cotton fabrics, other natural dress materials and handloom products.
The coffee shop at Folklore Museum is also extraordinary. It offers snacks, pure organic spices, herbal drinks, tea, coffee and even homemade delicacies. Surprisingly, there is a kitchen museum along with the coffee shop. In the Kitchen Museum, kitchen utensils, crookeries and potteries and traditional equipment that are used in ancient Kerala kitchen are on display.
Kerala Folklore Museum is next to the Ferry Junction in Thevara.
