Kovalam is one of the most well known and beautiful beaches of Kerala.
Kovalam is a natural bay on the Arabian Sea coast of Kerala and with its blue waters, white sand and green coconut trees looks like a picture postcard image of a tropical paradise.
Kovalam was discovered by the European guests of the then Travancore kingdom in the 1930s as an ideal beach destination for relaxation. However, Kovalam shot into limelight in the early seventies with arrivals of the masses of hippies. This exodus started the transformation of a casual fishing village of Kerala into one of the most important tourist destinations in all India.
Kovalam Beach consists of three continuous crescent-shaped beaches. The three beaches are called Lighthouse Beach, Hawah Beach and Samudra Beach. All the three beaches have clear sandy expanses and are backed by waving palm trees. The Light House beach gets its name from the Vizhinjam Light House located there. The lighthouse is on a rocky promontory, and is not open to the public.- Edakallu(meaning stone in between), separates Hawa Beach from Lighthouse Beach. The Ashoka Beachwhich divides the beach into its northern and southern sections sports a Government Rest House.
