Thangassery, a seaside village, was an active port in the 18th century. In this village, gold was used as currency. This incident marked the name Thangassery. Thangassery means gold. It is also known as 'Dutch Quilon’. Thangassery was ruled by the Portuguese, then the Dutch and finally the British.
Historical Significance of Thangassery
It was the Portuguese who first established their trading center in Thangassery. St Thomas Fort was established here by Afonso de Albuquerque in 1517. In 1661 Dutch took control of the land. In 1661, Dutch made the town their capital and named it Dutch Malabar. The fort was originally 20 feet tall. If you visit the beach, you will see the remains of the fort. Restoration work is ongoing by the Archeological Survey of India. Besides, Chinese coins and artifacts have been found from the spot. In this area, you will find some of the oldest schools of Kerala.
Thangassery Beach is 5 kilometres away from the main city of Kollam. The beach is only 3 kilometres long. The golden sandy beach invites you to its shores for a relaxing stroll at any time of the day. Palm groves and coconut trees with the sea close it are indeed a sight worth enjoying.
The People enjoy swimming on the beach. You can also try different kinds of exciting activities including surfing, speedboat ride, catamaran riding, scuba riding etc. People are seen enjoying sunbathing too. One of the major attractions of Thangassery is its lighthouse which is named after the place. It was built by the British in 1902. The 144 feet high lighthouse has been able to guide navigators and fishermen to find their way. It is the second tallest lighthouse in Kerala.
After climbing the 200 steps of the Lighthouse you can get a splendid view of Kollam city. Moreover, the views of the sea are also breathtaking. It is believed that you can see things stretching up to a distance of 13 miles from upon the Lighthouse. Climbing the stairs is not difficult at all rather fun.
In Thangassery Lighthouse entry fees for children and adults are different. Charges are applicable for taking photos also.
