Literally meaning “Thangal’s Rock”, this place at an elevation of 3,600 feet is dedicated to the celebrated saint Sheikh Fariduddin and is an important pilgrimage site.

It is also a renowned adventure zone and a favorite of nature lovers who throng to this place in great numbers every month!

With cool weather, lush greenery, insta-worthy panoramas of mist-laced hills and valleys, and intriguing rock formations believed to be imbued with healing energy, this serene locale is the perfect place to relax and unwind.

Best time to visit Thangal Para

October to March is the ideal time to visit Thangal Para in Vagamon, Idukki. The weather is cool and pleasant during this time and the temperature is between 10°C to 25°C.

The clear skies, cool mountain breeze, and refreshing greenery make it a great spot for relaxing, picnicking, trekking, and other outdoor activities.

While the summer is still pleasant enough to visit despite the heat and harsh sunlight in the afternoons, the monsoon brings heavy rain, making the mud trails slippery.

There is no entry fee for Thangal Para.

Thangal Para is open to tourists and locals from 6 AM to 6 PM. It’s a great place to catch a gorgeous sunrise or a picture-perfect sunset over the misty mountain ranges!

How to reach Thangal Para Vagamon

Thangal Para is located in the hills of Vagamon in the Idukki district, Kerala. It lies about 100 km from Kochi and 66 km from Kottayam.

Tucked away in Kolahalamedu, Thangal Para is about 7 km away from the Vagamon Bus Stop, making it easy for people to reach. From the entrance, it’s a 400-meter uphill trek.

It is easy to reach Thangal Para in Vagamon by various means of transport.

 

By air

Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport to Thangal Para located 100 km away. You can find taxis and prepaid cabs at the airport to reach Thangal Para and other parts of Vagamon.

The Angamaly KSRTC Bus Stand is 8 km from the airport and runs a frequent bus service to Vagamon.

By train

Kottayam Railway Station in Kottayam is the nearest railway station to Thangal Para located 66 km away. You can find a range of taxis, tuk-tuks, and KSRTC buses bound for Vagamon here too.

 

By car

Thangal Para in Vagamon is connected to all towns and cities in Kerala via a smooth road network. It’s easy to reach it by road from anywhere in South India.

You can take a taxi from Kochi or Kottayam, book a cab online, or drive there yourself via NH 183.

 

By bus

Kerala has a widespread network of intercity and intracity KSRTC buses. There are regular bus services to Vagamon from cities like Kochi, Kottayam, Trivandrum, Munnar, and Alleppey among others.
