Kottiyoor temple, also known as Vadakkeshwaram Temple\/ Ikkare Kottiyoor, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There is also a temporary shrine from the temple across the river called Akkare Kottiyoor. It is spread over 80 acres of land and opens during the annual 28-day festive season called the Vysakha festival or Vaishaka Mahotsavam in May- June.<\/p>\n

According to the ancient scriptures and manuscripts, the Kottiyoor Temple is believed to be the site of\u00a0 Daksha Yaga: it is the site where Mata Sati (wife of Lord Shiva) sacrificed and immolated herself. Akkare Kottiyoor (the eastern bank shrine) is the exact spot where this took place, and even today, people perform the rituals for the same. The festival includes re-enacting and honouring the sacrifice from the Hindu Mythology.<\/p>\n
