Thekkady is one of the world's well known and most fascinating wild life reserves – Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Thekkady is also a one of the beautiful hill stations in South India. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Thekkady is spread across 777 sq km and is well known for its wild life and scenic beauty. The main attraction in Thekkady is the boat cruise on Periyar Lake. During the boat ride, you can spot the wild life (elephants, Indian Gaur, Monkeys, Spotted deer, barking deer and birds of myriad varieties)in the close quarter.

Thekkady is a beautiful destination any time of the year. Its dense forests provide shade during the hot and humid summer months, while the colder winter months coincide with many colourful festivals. However, since Thekkady is very much an outdoor-adventure destination, monsoon season should be avoided due to heavy rainfall and flooding.

 

The monsoon season spans from June through to October. Torrential rain and widespread flooding make this an imprudent time to undertake outdoor adventure activities, meaning you would lose out on most of what Thekkady has to offer.

 

September, at the tail end of the monsoon season, is the ideal time to visit. Prices are still off-season, but the mountains, forests and waterfalls are at the peak of their luscious green beauty, and it's an excellent time to spot animals profiting from the renewal of nature's bounty.

 

The weather is cooler and drier between October and February. While this is the perfect time for outdoor activities and sports, beware of the peak season prices from December to January, as well as larger crowds.

Between March and May, Kerala's summer hits its peak, with sweltering and humid weather, making conditions less than ideal for anything but doing nothing. If you enjoy hot, wet heat, take advantage of the off-season prices and hit up the beach!

How to reach Thekkady

Thekkady, with its dense, luxuriant forests, diverse and exotic wildlife, plentiful tea estates and bountiful spice plantations is a well-known destination for nature enthusiasts. The town of Thekkady is at the centre of the famous Periyar Nature Reserve, India's only tiger reserve. The nearest airport to Thekkady is the Madurai Domestic Airport, from where you can jump on a taxi, train or bus to Thekkady. Pre-booking a taxi is also a convenient and comfortable option. Kochi is the nearest international airport and is well-connected to most major cities in India like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kochi, as well as South East Asia and the Middle-East. Both airports are regularly serviced by all primary domestic airlines.

By Train

The nearest train station to Thekkady is at Kottayam, although this is still 114 kilometres away from your final destination. Kottayam's railway station is well-connected to major cities across India with frequent and regular services. This is one of the most cost-effective, comfortable and scenic ways to travel around Kerala, and India in general. You can purchase your tickets online or in-person at the station booths, and enjoy a relaxing, scenic journey.

By Bus

Regular bus routes connect Thekkady to Kochi, Trivandrum and Kottayam, serviced by the state-owned KSRTC buses. Although this is a convenient, if more uncomfortable, way to travel, buses are likely to be very crowded. If you are loaded with luggage or uncomfortable in close quarters, this isn't the way to go.

Periyar Lake

It is an enriching experience to take a boat cruise along the Periyar Lake. Boat cruise along the banks of Periyar near to the Periyar National park is one of the major tourist attractions. If you are a keen observer you might get to see the spotted tigers, playful elephants or the red eyed bisons.
