Munnar means “three rivers” in Malayalam and Monnar or Munnar derives its name from the confluence of three mountain streams – Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundale. Munnar is a hill station and is easily accessible from Cochin, Coimbatore and Trichy. However please note that if you are planning a trip to Munnar and want to reach Munnar you will need at least two days to enjoy the complete beauty of Munnar since there are lot of sight seeing spots on the way in your trip to Munnar which will require one day and the entire sightseeing of Munnar will take one day.
If you are planning a trip to Munnar from Kochi, on the way visit the Kodanad Elephant Training Centreto watch the elephants bathing and baby elephants. Kodanad is the only elephant training center in central kerala. In Kodanad you can take an Elephant Safari and play with Baby elephants. The other attractions on the drive include Spice Plantations, Valara waterfalls, Cheeyappara waterfalls, Karadippara view point, Attukkad water fall view etc. The distance from Munnar to Cochin is 145 Kms.
If you are planning a trip to Munnar from Coimbatore, use the road via Udumalpethu from Coimbatore. The route is Coimbatore – Pollachi – Udumalpet – Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary – Munnar and the sightseeing on the way are Lakkom Falls and Sandalwood Forest in Udumalpet – Munnar road.The distance from Munnar to Coimbatore is 160 Kms
If you are planning a trip to Munnar from Trichy use the road via Trichy – Dindugal – Theni – Munnar.The distance from Munnar to Trichy is 195 Kms and hence you can also opt for a stay in Madurai and a darshan at Madurai Meenakshi Temple to make it less hectic.
